Arthritis

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a group of diseases that cause joint inflammation. The inflammation typically leads to joint pain, which can be persistent and quite severe. In addition to the joint pain, you may have imbalances and range-of-motion problems caused by compensatory muscle guarding, which is your body’s attempt to protect itself from pain.

What are the most common kinds of arthritis?

The most common types of arthritis include:

  • Osteoarthritis: causes cartilage breakdown within your joints
  • Rheumatoid arthritis: immune condition that destroys joint linings
  • Psoriatic arthritis: immune condition that damages joints, connective tissues, and skin
  • Gout: causes severe joint inflammation in a single joint, like the big toe

There are more than 100 types of arthritis, but what every variety has in common is joint pain. You can have arthritis virtually anywhere in your body. Fortunately, there are a variety of advanced treatments to alleviate your pain and other symptoms.

How is arthritis treated?

At FoRM Health PDX, the naturopathic medicine experts customize an arthritis treatment plan based on your needs. Your treatment may include one or more of these effective natural solutions:

Acupuncture and dry needling

Acupuncture stimulates key places on your body, called meridians, to normalize your internal energy flow and alleviate pain and imbalance. Dry needling stimulates painfully tight and knotted muscles to release and restore normal muscle function. Both can be very effective for arthritis pain.

Prolotherapy

This is an injection therapy in which your naturopathic doctor injects a mixture of dextrose, anesthetic, and saline into and around the damaged joints. Your injection may also include vitamins, hormone replacements, or other natural substances if you need them.

Prolotherapy irritates the joints to trigger your body's healing response. This can help you repair damaged tissue naturally. Prolotherapy has been shown to be very effective for some kinds of arthritis in studies, particularly knee osteoarthritis.

Prolozone therapy

As an injection therapy, Prolozone therapy works much like prolotherapy. Prolozone contains a blend of vitamins, nutrients, dextrose, and ozone/oxygen. Prolozone therapy, like prolotherapy, stimulates healing and tissue regeneration. The addition of ozone enhances your body's use of oxygen at the site of the damage, further enhancing an immune response. Prolozone is often very effective for arthritis, especially for chronic inflammation.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy

In PRP therapy, your FoRM Health PDX naturopathic doctor uses an IRB-approved method under a sterile hood to extract your body’s most powerful healing platelets from a small sample of your blood. These platelets are full of the growth factors that help with all kinds of tissue regeneration. PRP can help you repair cartilage and other tissue damaged by arthritis.

Your treatment plan may also include other types of therapies such as kinesiotaping, exercises, nutrition and/or supplemental support. Call FoRM Health PDX or schedule a consultation online today to get started.
